Julie, I am so sorry for not responding to your comment sooner. Yes the Elmo cake pan takes one regular cake mix, but I am sure you have figured that one by now. Again I am sorry for such a delay in responding to your question.

Hi Jeanne,

Your elmo cake has gained popularity the past few months! I am also making an elmo cake for my daughters birthday... Did you just use one box of cake mix in the elmo pan and filled the other cake pan completely?

Janna,
Your question is not dumb. When I baked the above cake I did not use the dowel rods. If you are going to put your Elmo on top of a sheet cake, I don't think you need to do that.

My only advise is not to fill the Elmo- fill only the sheet cake.

Hope it helps. Hope to hear from you after you made your Elmo cake. Feel free to upload your picture of it when you comment!

I'm a beginning cake maker so I apologize if this is a really dumb question! I stumbled upon your picture today and I'm going to be making this Elmo Wilton cake for my daughters b-day next week. When I was reading the directions on the Wilton website about stacking the Elmo on another cake, it says to follow the stack tiered cake construction directions. Do I really need to do all that with the dowel rods? Thanks so much in advance! I can only hope that my cake will look as good as yours!

Doris,

The "Wilton" Elmo will fit on top of a 11x15 sheet pan. However keep in mind that the Elmo cake along (one cake mix) will feed about 12 people - but I do not recommend filling the Elmo part of the cake. With a sheet cake on the bottom - you should be able to feed about 62 people....

Alternatively, you can put the Elmo cake on top of 16-inch round cake. With a round cake your are looking at 77 guests! :)

Do I hear PARTY?! Can I come? Just kidding.

I hope you get this on time and good luck making your cake. Let me know how it went.

Hi,

I know this is a really old entry I have been seraching for ideas for an elmo cake for my daughter's birthday. Can you tell me what size the cake is on the bottom? I have the elmo pan but was wondering what would be the best size pan to use that would support the elmo cake.
